Uluru + Kata Tjuta: 4 Experiences Worth Spending Your Money On
Uluru is one of Australia's most iconic destinations, but with so many tours available, it can be hard to know which ones are worth your time and money. We had 3 nights and 4 days, so I spent a lot of time researching which experiences would give us the best, most well-rounded taste of the Red Centre — from seeing Uluru and Kata Tjuta from the sky to sunrise walks, First Nations stories and an incredible night under the stars. We ended up spending around $850 AUD per person on these four experiences, and honestly, I'd book every single one again. If you're planning a trip to Uluru, these are the four experiences I would book again without hesitation.
Field of Light Star Pass

If you're going to do Field of Light, I'd really recommend paying extra for the Star Pass rather than general admission.
The Star Pass includes canapés, generous drinks and sunset views over Uluru, while general admission guests arrive after sunset. For me, the extra cost was completely worth it. It made the whole experience feel slower and created a real build-up, rather than arriving at dusk, seeing the lights and heading back.
We spent around three hours here, watching the sunset, enjoying the atmosphere and then walking through the Field of Light once it was dark. The lights themselves are incredible, but my favourite part was actually the atmosphere and the stars. Standing among the installation with the desert night sky above you felt genuinely magical.
It was honestly better than I expected and one of my absolute highlights.
Best for: Couples, groups and families with older kids
My tip: If you can, spend the extra on the Star Pass. The sunset and slower pace are what make it special.
FUN FACT: One of the things that really stood out to me about Uluru was how much more there is to understand once you learn the stories behind the landscape. Uluru and Kata Tjuta hold deep cultural significance for the Aṉangu people, the Traditional Owners of the land, and hearing these stories gave us a completely different appreciation of what we were seeing.
Kata Tjuta Sunrise & Walpa Gorge Walk

This was an early 6:15am start in winter, but completely worth getting out of bed for. The tour begins at the Kata Tjuta sunrise viewing platform, where you can also see Uluru in the distance. We had around 30 minutes to watch the colours change before stopping for a light breakfast.
Afterwards, we headed to another viewing area before walking into Walpa Gorge. The scenery was incredible, but what really made this experience stand out was the guide. She was friendly, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate, and I learnt so much about Aṉangu culture, the history of the region and the significance of Kata Tjuta.
It was a great combination of scenery, culture and walking, and felt like much more than simply being driven around to look at beautiful places.
Best for: Anyone wanting to combine walking, scenery and cultural knowledge
My tip: If you're trying to save money, this would be the experience I'd cut — but don't skip the Kata Tjuta sunrise viewing platform itself. You can still experience that incredible sunrise without booking the full tour.
FUN FACT: Kata Tjuta means “many heads” in the local Aṉangu language, and the 36 domes that make up the formation cover a much larger area than you might expect when you first see them.
Uluru Morning Guided Base Walk

The tour starts around sunrise, so you're there as the morning light hits Uluru and gradually transforms the rock into those incredible deep red colours. The full walk is around 10.5km, but don't let the distance put you off. It's surprisingly flat, and I found it much easier than expected.
The biggest reason I'd recommend paying for the guided experience is the knowledge. You're not just walking around a giant red rock — you're learning about its history, significance and the stories and teachings of the Aṉangu people.
There are multiple stops along the way, and the rock looks completely different as you move around it. Having a guide gave the walk so much more meaning than simply doing it independently. Breakfast is included, but I'd bring your own snacks too. The tour starts early and breakfast isn't served until around 10am.
Best for: Anyone wanting to really understand Uluru, not just see it
My tip: Do the full walk if you're able. The different perspectives make it worth it.
Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta Flight

I'll be honest $380 AUD isn't cheap. But if your budget allows for one big splurge at Uluru, this is the one I'd choose.
Seeing Uluru and Kata Tjuta from the air gives you a completely different appreciation of just how enormous and remote the landscape is. From above, the Red Centre looks almost otherworldly — it genuinely felt like something out of a movie.
Our flight was advertised as shorter, but because the conditions were so good, our pilot extended it to around 40 minutes. He was calm, knowledgeable and made the whole experience feel incredibly special.
The views were pure magic, and it's something I'll genuinely remember for the rest of my life. If you can time your flight around sunrise or sunset, even better. Watching the landscape change colour from above is incredible.
Best for: Anyone who wants the ultimate wow factor
My tip: If you're only going to splurge on one experience, make it this one.
So, Which Experiences Are Actually Worth It?
I researched these pretty carefully because I didn't want to spend money on every tour available, and I'm really happy with the balance we ended up with. Together, these four experiences gave us a bit of everything — the Red Centre from the sky, sunrise over Kata Tjuta, a deeper understanding of Uluru and Aṉangu culture, and a magical night under the stars.

I didn't want to spend our four days booking every possible tour or doing experiences that felt like tourist filler. These four felt genuinely worthwhile and gave us a really well-rounded experience of Uluru and the Red Centre.
If you're visiting for 3 nights and 4 days and want to make the most of your time without blowing your budget, these are the four I'd put my money towards.
It's hard to find a bad view of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, but each of these four experiences showed them in a different way. The Field of Light was a magical night under the stars, Kata Tjuta offered a stunning sunrise, the base walk revealed the history and cultural significance of Uluru, and the scenic flight highlighted the vast scale and beauty of the Red Centre. Together, these experiences turned an amazing destination into one of the most memorable trips I've ever taken.
