Uluru + Kata Tjuta, Australia: 4 Experiences That Are Absolutely Worth Booking

Uluru is one of Australia's most iconic destinations, but with so many tours available, it can be hard to know which ones are worth your time and money. I wanted experiences that would help me appreciate not only the stunning landscapes but also the culture, history, and significance of Australia's First Nations peoples.

The four tours I chose each offered a different perspective on Uluru and Kata Tjuta, from watching the desert come alive at sunrise to seeing the Red Centre from the air. If you're planning a trip to Uluru, these are the four experiences I would book again without hesitation.

Field of Light Star Pass

ByVoyages Ayers Rock Resort - 139AUD

I highly reccomend you pay the extra for the Star Pass rather than general admission. Star Pass includes canapés and generous drinks while watching the sunset over Uluru, whereas general admission guests arrive after dark so you miss the sunset. Transfers to and from accommodation are included, and the drink service was exceptionally generous throughout the evening.

The sunset views over Uluru were breathtaking, and the Field of Light exhibition itself was spectacular. From an elevated viewing platform, you watch the lights come alive as the sun sets before walking down into the installation after dark. Combined with the incredible desert night sky, it feels as though the artwork and the stars become one. An unforgettable experience and one of my absolute highlights.

Kata Tjuta Sunrise & Walpa Gorge Walk

By SEIT Tours - 249AUD

This was an early start 6:15am start but completely worth it. The tour begins at the Kata Tjuta sunrise viewing platform, where you can also see Uluru in the distance. The sunrise was simply stunning, with around 30 minutes to enjoy the changing colours before a light breakfast.

Afterwards, the tour continues to another viewing area before heading into the Walpa Gorge walk. The guide was outstanding; friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate. I learned so much about Aṉangu culture, the history of the region, and the significance of Kata Tjuta. A fantastic combination of scenery, culture, and walking.

Uluru Morning Guided Base Walk

By AAT Kings - 219AUD

The Uluru Base Walk is a must-do for almost everyone visiting and I highly recommend doing it with a guide. Starting at sunrise, you're dropped at the base of the rock and get to watch Uluru transform into a vivid red as the morning light hits it. An incredible sight.

The full walk is approximately 10.5 km, with multiple stops along the way where the guide shares fascinating stories, history, and cultural insights that you would likely miss if walking independently. Breakfast is included, but bring your own snacks as well—the tour starts at 6:15 am and breakfast isn't served until around 10:00 am.

Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuata Flight

By Ayers Rock Scenic Flight - 380AUD

One of the most incredible experiences I have ever had while travelling. The scenic flight provides unparalleled views of Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and the vast surrounding outback. Although the advertised flight time was shorter, our pilot generously extended the experience to around 40 minutes because conditions allowed.

Seeing Uluru and Kata Tjuta from the air gives you a completely different appreciation of their scale and beauty. The landscapes are extraordinary, and the views are something I will genuinely remember for the rest of my life. Sunset and sunrise are the best times to watch to landscape turn red. If your budget allows for one splurge experience at Uluru, make it this.

It's hard to find a bad view of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, but each of these four experiences showed them in a different way. The Field of Light was a magical night under the stars, Kata Tjuta offered a stunning sunrise, the base walk revealed the history and cultural significance of Uluru, and the scenic flight highlighted the vast scale and beauty of the Red Centre. Together, these experiences turned an amazing destination into one of the most memorable trips I've ever taken.
