5 First-Time Travel Tips for Esperance, Western Australia
If you’ve ever seen photos of Esperance, chances are it immediately shot to the top of your Australia travel bucket list. Powder-white sand, unbelievably turquoise water, and kangaroos casually hopping along the beach. It almost doesn’t look real. And honestly? It’s every bit as beautiful as the photos. But there are a few things about visiting Esperance that surprised us on our first trip. Some of them made the trip better once we figured them out, and some we definitely wish we had known beforehand. So if you’re planning a visit, here are five important things to know before your first trip to Esperance in Western Australia.
Book Camp Sites Early
One of the biggest highlights of visiting Esperance is spending time in Cape Le Grand National Park. This is where you’ll find some of the most famous beaches in Australia, including Lucky Bay, where kangaroos can be found hanging out right on the sand. Inside the park there are a couple of campsites that are absolutely incredible — La Grand Beach + Lucky Bay Beach.
Spaces are limited and they can be extreamelty popular. Bookings open through the Western Australia Parks and Wildlife website, and during peak seasons they can sell out very quickly. If you’re planning to visit during school holidays or summer, you’ll want to be organised and book as soon as reservations open. It’s absolutely worth the effort though — camping here is one of the most special ways to experience the area.
This also includes all other campsites in the Esperance area. Demand is high, and spaces are limited, so while they might not be as popular as the site in Cape Le Grand - don’t leave this until the last minute. Over christmas they open the overflow sports staduim for $40 a night to stop illegal camping so if you are in a pickle this time of year they may have space on a first come first serve basis.
2. Buy Your Parks Pass Before You Arrive
You’ll need a national parks pass to enter Cape Le Grand National Park, as well as many other parks across Western Australia. While you can buy a pass when you arrive, it’s often better value to purchase one ahead of time — especially if you’re doing a road trip and visiting several parks along the way.
Western Australia has an incredible number of national parks, and chances are Esperance won’t be the only one on your itinerary. Buying the pass in advance can save both time and money once you’re on the road.
3. Be Prepared for More Driving Than You Expect
One thing that surprised us was just how spread out everything is around Esperance. Most accommodation, campsites, and supermarkets are located in the town of Esperance itself, but the famous Cape Le Grand National Park is about a 50-minute drive away. Even once you’re inside the park, the distances between beaches can still be quite large. For example, driving from Lucky Bay to Wharton’s Cove can take around an hour, despite technically being within the same place.
It’s not a problem as the drives are beautiful but it’s definitely something to factor into your plans each day.
4. Bring Your Own Food and Water
If you’re heading out to explore Cape Le Grand National Park or doing the famous Great Ocean Drive, don’t expect lots of places to stop for food or supplies. In fact, options can be pretty limited.
Before leaving town, it’s a good idea to stock up on:
Drinking water
Snacks + lunch supplies
Extra fuel if needed (Seriously)
Once you’re out exploring the beaches and coastal roads, you’ll likely be gone for several hours — and honestly, you probably won’t want to leave once you’re there.
5. Pack for Wind, Sun, and Big Temperature Changes
Esperance is known for its stunning coastline, but something that caught us completely off guard was just how windy it can be. Yes even in the peak of summer.
During the day, especially when the sun is shining, it can feel incredibly hot. But once the sun starts to set, the temperature can drop quickly and the coastal wind can make it feel much colder than expected.
The best approach is to pack layers, including:
A fleece and long bottoms for the evening
Sun protection like a hat and sunscreen
Comfortable beach clothing for the daytime
Being prepared for both warm sunshine and chilly evenings will make your days exploring much more enjoyable.
